The Musée du Fjord’s mission is to preserve
and highlight the historic, natural and artistic
heritage of the Saguenay Fjord and the Baie
des Ha! Ha! territories and to facilitate acquiring
knowledge about them, to communicate this
knowledge and to allow the public to discover
their importance.
The museum, initially named Musée
Monseigneur-Dufour, was founded in 1967.
Located on the shores of Baie des Ha! Ha!,
the Musée du Fjord was inaugurated and
incorporated in 1983. The museum offers
exhibitions on subjects pertaining to nature
and the environment. These presentations
are either artistic, historic or scientific.
In producing these exhibitions, the Musée
du Fjord uses its resources or those of its
regional, provincial, national or international
partners.
Musée du Fjord is a member of the Canadian
Museum Association and the Société des musées
québécois (Québec's Museum Association).
It also offers exhibitions produced by other
museums. Educational activities are available
to the general public such as conferences, courses,
discussion groups, guided tours and scientific
or academic workshops. There are about 20,000
visitors annually.
In July 1996, the great flood that struck the
Saguenay region caused $900,000 of damage
to the museum. The permanent exhibition and
all of the equipment for the presentation of
temporary exhibitions were destroyed. During
the chaotic period following this ordeal, a project
to rebuild the Museum was initiated. A financial
and a scientific committee were created by
soliciting partner help. The museum's rebirth is
progressing and the community is supporting it
via significant financial contributions to realize
the rebuilding project. For more information
