Ethnological Collection

The history of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean in 2,000 artifacts from hundreds of donors.

More than 800 donors have contributed to enrich the Museum's ethnological collection, which now comprises nearly 2,000 objects.

The diversity of artifacts illustrates the daily life of Saguenay residents, from the beginning of colonization up to the 20th century. The main themes include traditional crafts, domestic objects, religious life, clothing, and folk art.

The Museum also has a collection of nearly 3,000 photographs which depict 180 years of history in La Baie and Lower Saguenay, as well as the evolution of our museum. The photographs show landscapes, places, public figures, and families who have lived in the Saguenay Fjord region.

In addition to all this, there are 122 antique engravings of marine mammals, hundreds of books on local history, and nearly 500 videos on various topics related to the region. These videos were donated by the now-defunct community television station Baie des Ha! Ha!

Natural Science Collection

Nearly 500 preserved specimens and over 1,000 fossils covering the flora and fauna from here and elsewhere.

Our natural science collection features nearly 500 specimens from the animal kingdom, including mammals, birds, fish, crustaceans, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. We also have a variety of dried plants and fungi, as well as a large selection of minerals.

This collection was largely acquired through donations, notably that of the Antonian Sisters of Mary in 2015, as well as from the Musée de la Mer in 2023. In 2024, the Musée du Fjord also acquired Mr. Daniel Martin's fossil collection which includes more than 1,000 specimens, mostly from Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean.
